Two chipped gems of the same type plus 10 gold will upgrade to a Flawed gem, slightly increasing the bonuses earned by socketing the gem. Chippies drop until targets reach about level 21, when Flawed Gems begin to drop. These are the first gems seen by a new player, and they begin to drop from targets of round level 15. Chipped Gems (AKA chippies) are the 1st rank of gem, with the lowest bonus to items.
